Helpful Tips For Selecting The Right Rug & How To Care For It

When it comes to textiles, rugs are the most versatile. They can be used in any room of the house and bring color, texture and pattern to a space. Rugs can also help dictate the style of a room and tie together all the elements within it.

Finding the right one can be a challenge because of all the options in the marketplace but here’s a quick and easy guide to help you find the right material for your home and how to care for it.

Synthetic Rugs

Synthetic rugs are common and very popular and range from many different materials such as viscose, polyester, acrylic, etc. They tend to be more affordable and can provide a wide range of colors and sizes. Despite their popularity, synthetic rugs are very difficult to maintain. Liquid can cause the fibers to yellow or stain and ultimately (and quickly) damaging the fibers.

Wool Rugs

With a wool rug, you can expect it to last for years. Wool is a natural material that is easy to clean and maintain.

If you have kids, pets, or all of the above, a wool rug may be the perfect choice for your home. Wool rugs are incredibly durable and flame resistant. With a natural stain sealant called lanolin, dirt and stains aren’t able to penetrate the rugs easily. Should a spill occur on your wool rug, a mild detergent should do the trick in getting it clean.

In addition to being durable, wool rugs are also very beautiful! The colors are rich and vibrant and will look great in any room in your home.

Silk Rugs

Silk rugs is a luxurious choice while also providing you with durability. Silk fibers contain amino acids that aid in their durability, however, over time they may lose their luster in high traffic areas. For light spills, a mild detergent and water may do the trick, however, cleaning should be left to the professionals to maintain.

Jute Rugs

Jute rugs have become very popular because of their relaxed vibe, however, extreme caution should be used before making your purchase. Jute rugs are made from the Jute plant which resembles wool. Stains can be a pain when it comes to jute rugs because of the soft texture so extreme care should be taken when cleaning. Blotting rather then scrubbing with water is best to not disturb the fibers and should be addressed immediately.

Rug care will depend on the type of rug, the material, and even the room that it's going in. Make sure you carefully consider when, where, and how you'll use a rug before making a purchase. That way you can better determine what type of rug will work best for you—and maintain its beauty for years to come.
